The Most Underrated Stealth Series Ever
The INSANE History Behind the Most MISUNDERSTOOD Stealth Series
Getting old is great, actually - it means you can appreciate stealth games after years of "just not getting it, really." I love Thief, I love Dishonored, but with Styx, I started to understand the proper appeal of the genre. I think it's at least worth highlighting. And hey - the industry's still being itself, so why not hop on old games? They're still there!! All of them!!
This video essay, or whatever you wanna call it, digs into the history of Cyanide Studio, Spiders, the progenitor to the Styx games in Orcs and Men, and eventually the Styx duology. I'm sure I'll have to change the thumbnail and title to really hit the algo with this one, but I promise the meat's good. Maybe "Styx, Cyanide, and the Western B Game" ... ... Lol jk this is youtube, I ain't sending my work out to die for free T_T
*also dropping an apology here for conflating OCD and perfectionism. I'll make sure I don't do that going forward.

What Your Main ACTUALLY Says About You

Avatar selection and you! How am I supposed to pick a character? All these tier lists to sift through, all of these different moves and looks and costumes? Sheesh! I'm just trying to land a combo here! Avatar selection is a concept that every player engages with differently. There's no exact science to figuring out who you're going to like. Sometimes it's just impulse. Think back to your first ...
A Monster Hunter's Journey | Generational Retrospective
Переглядів 128 тис.Місяць тому
Obliterating the Last Vestiges of my Personhood with Monster Hunter I was tasked with looking back at every generation of Monster Hunter. This is an impossible job, at least without taking years to produce a video, so I went with a core entry per generation, and played extra games where necessary. MH1 for gen 1, Dos for gen 2, Tri for gen 3, MH4U (though the ultimate games originated in the 3rd...
THE GAMER

full game spoilers I never expected to like The Witcher as fiction; it looked silly at a glance and I was already planning to cover Dragon Age. I poured some leftover Christmas wine and sat down with The Witcher: Enhanced Edition and accidentally fell into the hole. Game's fun, turns out. The Witcher may have originated from a series of novels, but it manages to use the video game medium to mec...
Princess Crown and the Forgotten Legacy of Vanillaware

Odin Sphere and Muramasa: The Demon Blade, even the prototype of Dragon's Crown, owe their existence to Princess Crown. You know, that George Kamitani game nobody played that functionally kickstarted Vanillaware. Here's the story. Princess Crown was released for the Sega Saturn in 1997, and that title, while massively destructive for Kamitani's career, was preserved and iterated on with his lat...
Bomberman's Bizarre 3D Game Design

5 games 1 braincell Bomberman is a whole history that you could largely reduce to a short clip of buddy boy trompin' 'round a maze dropping bombs. It's not complicated. But things get a little weird once Bomberman starts appearing in the 3rd dimension. How do you take a profoundly 2-dimensional concept and adapt it for 3D space? That's what we're cataloguing today. Bomberman 64, Bomberman Hero,...

An Excruciating Look at Armored Core
Переглядів 61 тис.6 місяців тому
give or take a few Armored Core is wrapped up in a web of gamer mythologizing, like any fairly hardcore series that the mass market doesn't really engage with. It's surprisingly playable, even today, regardless of any controls myths and horror stories. It's got difficulty spikes and plenty of unhinged systemic cruft, but it's still just a mech-battling game. So how'd they make it so many times?...
The Coolest PS2 Game You'll Never Play | Steambot Chronicles

Bumpy Trot!! Bumpy Trot, also called Steambot Chronicles in the west, is a lot of things that traditionally pass as clickbait. It's absolutely one of the most underrated, unsung PS2 rpgs ever produced. As far as I'm concerned, it's a masterclass in narrative-mechanical cohesion. It's one of the greatest video games I've played, even if it doesn't rate high numerically, and it's world is surpris...

losing my xenomind out here I'm not sure what I expected walking into Xenosaga. I've played Xenogears and I've played Xenoblade Chronicles, and I'm used to a certain kind of experience. Nioh Nioh is a fun game that you can purchase and play today. All joking aside, I never gave Nioh a fair shake. About 6 years ago I failed to even complete the thing before firing off a "review," so today, I'm rectifying my mistakes by taking a serious critical look at the games after finishing the main campaigns and the DLC. Everyone knows Nioh 2 owns, but we cover that too. Consider this a sp...
Xenogears is Unhinged
Переглядів 134 тис.10 місяців тому
i have left this mortal plane Xenogears is one of the PSX rpg darlings, and for good reason. Square put out all kinds of incredible games before the turn of the millennium, but the Xeno franchise has persisted despite endless challenges and even arguably uncompelling gameplay (depending on the player). So let's inquire a little. Xenogears is the brainchild of Tetsuya Takehashi and Soraya Saga. ...

One reason I always loved playing as Yun Seong in Soul Calibur 2 is because once I started unlocking new weapons for him to use in matches and I saw Xiao Lian, immediately I was like "Holy shit this is like Sting from The Lord of the Rings as a scimitar, this is incredible I love this!" entirely unaware that (as far as I know) the kinds of swords he used weren't actually scimitars at all. Some of them just sported comparable aesthetics.

I remember people saying Of Orcs & Men (the first game in the Universe) was dogshit, never played it, but was aware of it because a friend was a fanboy of it. He'd tell me tales of people not understanding it's appeal and how innovative it was. So when I heard there was a stealth spinoff (Styx) I thought I should give it a try. Been a fan of the series ever since (except OaM still never played it lol)

29:50 or in sometimes their pathing deliberately leads them to trailing you as I found in one of the Dishonored games. Specifically the "Death of the Outsider". Tagged a couple guards and every single time they tried to cluster up to the closest where I was hiding and tried following the exact path I made. I was being all stealthy no-kill to. Weirdly I already suspected such.

  • @BenOlsberg1995

This game is infamously buggy from what I know. My friend has the Gamecube version and I remember I came over once when he was in the middle of fighting the final boss. I don't remember the glitch that happened specifically but I think it resulted in his character being softlocked in the final boss room with no way to inflict damage on Skorne but my friend was still vulnerable. So the only way out was to reset. He and I did have fun playing it together one time but to get any significant enjoyment out of this I think you'd need to play it with friends. And I typically prefer to play video games by myself so if I'm reiterating a common opinion about its design in favor of a more social approach to playing, that goes to show how much, at least potentially, better it is in that regard.

Love the fact tha KBash liked the underwater segments in Tri. It is absolutely my favorite part of that game and I will always hope that they bring it back. The environment, the themes, the atmosphere, the monsters they were all made with so much detail and thought put into them. It is so disheartening knowing that the community was so full of try hards that complained so much about how much they sucked at it that capcom just over canned the undewater stuff and over corrected. Now every time they use one of those monsters or areas it just doesn't feel the same without it

Let me say first that I am already subscribed and not the greatest with grammar. But the way that you handled this video, and Dragon's Crown in particular, hit me. Even though I don't always agree with your assessments doesn't mean that I blow you or your videos off. Most of the time, it is a means by which I reevaluate the material at hand or even whatever I am personally indulging in. The depth of your research is always commendable; the way you handle deep and often difficult subject matters is consistent. I was playing FF14 while listening in, but before even an hour had passed, I was thoroughly enraptured and my game was closed. I had only ever played Dragon's Crown and it was somewhat difficult to put into words why I enjoyed it. It might be because it is simply a beautiful work of art. Art is not inherently sexy nor chaste, but always indulgent. Art is a pure means by which the author can express their feelings, either for the world around them or for themselves inwardly. It's not that I keep coming back because sorceress booba; it's because the world has such a melodious and loving feel to its craftsmanship. Your videos help me see things in new light all the time and honestly, genuinely, thank you. I can't wait to see more.
